Hello, and welcome to the twentieth edition of our Public Health Policy Reviews Spanish language weekly digital newsletter.
The week of June 23rd to 27th ended with the national excitement of New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s shocking upset of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Party primary for the New York City mayoral race.
Mr. Cuomo, one of two men among five overall successors to former New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s (1983-1994) prominent political, media, and legal legacy, conceded defeat in the Democratic primary at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24th, 2025.
Besides Andrew Cuomo’s history as a serial sexual abuser, which contributed to Mr. Mamdani’s victory last week, community activists and organizers in New York’s working-class neighborhoods argue that what made the Assemblyman’s primary campaign for mayor stand out was his serious attention to the needs of working-class people struggling with the high cost of living.
The cost of living in New York City has been soaring for years.
Even before US President Donald Trump’s 2024 election win, working-class New Yorkers had long felt the pinch and contradictions of a gentrifying and expensive city.
However, the strength of Assemblyman Mamdani’s political organizing and community mobilizing strategies was rooted in the strong connections he forged with New York City’s immigrant communities since 2021.
Countless working-class and immigrant residents of New York City turned out for the Zohran Mamdani mayoral campaign to consistently “door-knock” across all five boroughs in both pouring rain and scorching sun, talking to their neighbors and friends.
Mr. Mamdani is relentlessly focusing on meeting the material needs of working-class and immigrant New Yorkers with clear campaign plans and policy proposals designed to give them room to breathe through the unrelenting efforts of President Trump, his administration, and national Republicans to attack public health, social services, and civil rights.
On Friday, June 27th, Public Health Policy Reviews wrote about the impending Senate passage of Mr. Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” or the OBBB for short, before Congress heads into the Fourth of July holiday recess.
Donald Trump is aggressively lobbying Republicans in a desperate attempt to pass his economic policy package on Monday, June 30th.
The OBBB features steep tax cuts for the President’s billionaire and millionaire campaign donors, as well as all other wealthy people in America.
